This new lens builds upon its predecessors (models UC and UC II), offering the same focal length range (28mm to 105mm), and focusing range (19.7 inches to infinity, at all zoom settings) and providing a slightly larger effective aperture (f/3.8-5.6), while reducing the weight to less than 10 oz. A new lens design, including the use of aspherical optics and new mechanical construction, are credited with the reduction in weight, while maintaining the high level of performance for which these lenses are known. This model retains the internal focusing system and a non-rotating front barrel for convenient filter use.

The new LEICA APO-SUMMICRON-M 75mm f/2.0 ASPH is designed to be universal in its usage, as good at infinity as in the close range and at all apertures but its very natural rendering of details (very low distortion and vignetting) as well as its performance at open aperture and at close range make it particularly suitable for lively available light portraits or to isolate part of the picture when doing a reportage. The very natural looking perspective of this focal length make beautiful portraits possible with a three-dimensional feel to them. Decisive image elements can be emphasized without the image losing its expression of true reality. The optical performance is excellent at wide-open aperture. As the MTF curves show the contrast reproduction only slightly increases by stopping down. The closest focus distance is 0.7 m (27 in.) against 1m for the 90mm general-purpose lenses. A new velvety matt finish makes the Leica APO-SUMMICRON-M 75mm f/2.0 ASPH immune to flare. Distortion is not a concern and barely visible in real life. Thus the images taken with this Summicron are as close to reality as you can get. Outstanding close-up pictures are made possible via a floating element. This lens element changes its relative position to the rest of the optical system while focusing. The optical structure of the LEICA SUMMILUX-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH. consists of eight lens in 5 groups. Glass with anomalous partial dispersion (elements 2/3) was used to ensure correct color rendition. Lens element 2 is made of a fluorite-type glass while lens element 3 is made from glass originating from the former Leitz glass laboratory. Lens element 4 has an aspherical surface. Lens elements 1, 6 and 7 are made of glass with a very high refractive index to minimize monochromatic aberrations. In all every innovation currently available in lens technology - aspherical lenses, glass with anomalous partial dispersion (APO), glass with a high refraction index and a floating element - has been combined to create a lens that will set new imaging standards. This is the first Leica M lens with a specifically patented 'floating element' used to maintain imaging performance at a very high level even in close-focus ranges down to 0.7m. During focusing, the rearmost optical component (elements 7/8) moves relative to the rest of the optical system and produces brilliant image quality in near focus ranges.
