Anyone who's ever peered through their binoculars and wished they could freeze the moment will delight in the Meade CVB1002 CaptureView, which combines a digital camera with a traditional binocular body. Whether you're watching a mountain goat leaping across a gorge, a record-breaking home run, or a rare bird in a distant tree, the CaptureView lets you see the action up close and take a digital snapshot. The camera stores up to 40 pictures with 640 x 480 resolution or up to 400 photos with 320 x 240 resolution on its 8 MB of internal memory. While the image quality isn't as sharp as on many newer digital cameras, the convenience of taking pictures through the binoculars' 30mm objective lenses more than makes up the difference. It's also easy to transfer images to a PC via the included USB cable. And you don't need to purchase separate photo-editing software thanks to the bundled CD-ROM, which includes a simple editing and image-capture application. Additional features include a focus range that clarifies images within 16 feet, automatic exposure and white balance control, a neck strap and carrying case for easy transport, and fully coated optics. The CaptureView, which requires two AAA batteries (not included), measures 5.6 by 1.9 by 3.8 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.
