Philips
With the ability to play standard and recordable CDs--including discs brimming with MP3 music files--Philips' candy-apple-red EXP313 is a great basic CD player. Its rich sound and extended, 100-second MP3 skip protection make it perfect for listening, studying, and exercising. It also offers shuffle and repeat modes, a heat-resistant body, a handy belt clip, and vehicle audio and power adapters so you can use this CD player literally anywhere."Magic" electronic skip protection automatically stores digital music information during play using a 100-second buffer (MP3, 128 kbps; 45 seconds with audio CD tracks) and inserts it in place of lost information when the CD player is bumped or shaken. Playback options include 50-track programming for extended MP3 sequencing, resume (a bookmark function that picks up playback where you last stopped), repeat (track or disc), and random play.
MP3 features include ID3 tag recognition for convenient song and artist name displays and a navigation system that lets you scroll through discs by either album or by individual track. The player reads files encoded at anywhere from 32 to 320 kbps.
A hold switch prevents unintended interruptions in playback and saves batteries by negating playback when the player is stopped. Auto power off kicks in one minute after playback has ended, an additional battery-saving convenience. The player's 1-bit digital-to-analog converter renders digital audio as smoothly and accurately as possible, and the player runs for approximately 20 hours (MP3 playback; 15 hours for audio CD) on 2 AA batteries (not supplied).

With MP3 compatibility and everything needed to use the player with a car cassette deck, the SL-MP36C puts hours of entertainment at your fingertips. Load the player with a custom-made CD-R or CD-RW, and it's easy to organize MP3 files into a playlist of favorite songs or albums. The MP3 function can also be set to random or repeat play (for up to 99 tracks). The player was designed with a 45-second backup memory (100 seconds with MP3 files) to virtually eliminate CD skipping under normal listening conditions, and its heat-resistant polycarbonate body design suits it for all but the most extreme outdoor use. You can program the SL-MP36C to play at random, in a specified order, or to repeat one song or the whole disc, making it possible to enjoy favorite tunes without interruption. Panasonic's S-XBS (Extra Bass System) gives music an added bass boost for full, powerful sound.A top-panel LCD readout shows track number and elapsed time, while the player's slide-lock top cover keeps the player sealed during playback, so you'll never lose a disc to common jostling. By pressing a button inside the player, a CD pops up for easy removal. Panasonic's Power Last function makes two standard AA batteries (not included) last much longer than they would in another player, up to 30 hours, or up to 40 hours during MP3 playback. You can also run the player from rechargeable batteries (not included) or from the supplied AC adapter. To power the player in the car, just plug the car adapter into a cigarette lighter and you're ready to go. No matter what power source is used, the auto-power-off function shuts down the player when a CD ends.
